Wondering & wandering

One of my favourites…

I love designing book covers. I really, really do. It’s the one aspect of being a freelancer that really pays off, time and time again. I especially love designing them for Modjaji Books, an indie get up started by the wonderful Colleen Higgs in 2007.

Modjaji is a South African pioneer in that they only publish work by women. I’m sure you’ve read one of their titles. And, if you haven’t, you should. Besides being amazing (and award winning!), they’re also pretty beautiful. Colleen has cultivated a distinct aesthetic that sets Modjaji Books apart from the Bebas-titled covers you’ll see on Exclusive Books’ SA Fiction shelf.

Another reason which their website articulates better than I can at this time of day:

“[Colleen Higgs] has consistently championed small-scale, self and independent publishing in South Africa.”

It’s this, and the creative freedom that Modjaji encourages, that makes working with them a designer and illustrator’s dream.

Below, my latest Modjaji project, a book of poetry by Thandi Sliepen, ‘The Turtle Dove Told Me’. The cover illustration is by Thandi herself.
